25 March 2025

If you are exploring Barcelona and want a plan that combines history, good food and incredible views of the sea, then you have to visit the Palau de Mar. It is a place with a special charm, perfect for a leisurely stroll, eat something delicious and discover a little more about the city. As someone who lives here, I’ll tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

What is the Palau de Mar?

The Palau de Mar is a historic building located in the Port Vell, right next to the sea and very close to the Born district. Originally, it was a 19th century port trade warehouse, but over the years it has been transformed into a lively space. It now houses offices, restaurants with spectacular terraces and the famous Museu d’Història de Catalunya.

The best thing about this place is that it combines its industrial past with a modern atmosphere. You can come for a stroll, have a drink overlooking the port or immerse yourself in the history of Catalonia in the museum.

What to do in Palau de Mar?

Visiting the Museu d’Història de Catalunya

Eating on a terrace facing the sea
The Palau de Mar is a gastronomic paradise. There are several restaurants with direct views of the Port Vell, perfect for enjoying paella, tapas or just a glass of wine while looking at the sea. Some recommended ones are:
  • Cal Pinxo → Ideal for a good paella or fideuá.
  • La Gavina → A classic with fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.
  • 1881 per Sagardi → Restaurant on the terrace of the museum, with one of the best views of Barcelona.
Stroll around Port Vell and Barceloneta.
After lunch, I recommend walking along the promenade. From the Palau de Mar you can continue to Barceloneta, where you can relax on the beach, or walk in the direction of the Ramblas and the Columbus Monument.
If you like photography, this place is perfect. With the sea in the background, the boats and the contrast of old and modern buildings, you are sure to get some amazing pictures.
Relaxing on the terrace of the Museu d’Història de Catalunya
Even if you do not enter the museum, its terrace is free access. You can go upstairs and have a drink at the bar while enjoying a spectacular view of the port and the city. It’s a less touristy spot, so it’s usually quiet.
