24 March 2025
As we mentioned before, Barcelona is a vibrant city where the mix of cultures is reflected in every street, place, and moment. However, although Spanish is widely spoken, Catalan is a fundamental part of the local identity, deeply rooted for many of its citizens. Learning a few phrases in this language will not only make your stay easier but also allow you to connect better with the locals. If you speak Spanish, it will undoubtedly be a bit easier for you, but if not, it’s not too difficult to learn. Below, we share useful expressions to help you navigate the city naturally and connect seamlessly with the capital of Catalonia without any trouble.
Greetings and everyday phrases
If you want to make a good first impression, mastering basic greetings is key. “Bon dia” and “Bona nit” are essential expressions for saying good morning and good night. To say goodbye, you can use “Adéu” or “Fins aviat” if you want to express “see you soon.” Being polite is always appreciated, so saying “Si us plau” when asking for something or “Gràcies” to say thank you will be a well-received gesture by the locals in Barcelona.

Useful expressions in restaurants
Eating in Barcelona is an experience in itself, and knowing a few phrases can make a difference. If you want to see the menu, you can ask “Podria veure el menú, si us plau?” To order a drink, “Jo voldria una cervesa” will help you enjoy a refreshing local beverage. If you want to compliment the food, a simple “Estava deliciós!” will bring a smile to the waiter’s face. As for the people around you, they will likely say “Bon profit” to wish you an enjoyable meal, just as they say in France, bon appétit.

Directions and transportation
Getting around the city will be easier with some key phrases and by following our tips. If you need to find a metro station, you can ask “On és el metro més proper?” To find out the ticket price, “Quant costa el bitllet?” is the right expression to use. Finally, if you’re looking for a specific place, you can say “Vull anar a la Sagrada Família” or your chosen destination.

My experience

If you visit Barcelona, dare to say at least a ‘Bon dia’ or a ‘Gràcies’. The locals will appreciate it, and it will make you feel part of the city!”
Shopping and markets
As we mentioned in some articles on this blog, Barcelona has iconic markets like La Boquería and various shopping spots where a few phrases will be very helpful. If you want to ask about the price of a product, say “Quant val això?” If you’re looking for a different clothing size, “Teniu una talla més gran?” will help in your search. And if you need to pay by card, “Accepten targeta de crèdit?” is the question you should ask in these places.

Connecting with catalans
To integrate better with the locals, you can start with “Com estàs?” to ask how they are. If you’re meeting someone for the first time, “Encantat/Encantada de coneixe’t” is a polite way to introduce yourself. And if you’re learning Catalan and want to show interest, “No parlo català, però l’entenc una mica” will help break the ice. Without a doubt, in this particular section, you’ll find the most subtle way to blend in with people who speak this language. We hope these tips are helpful to you.
