Glories Park: A Relaxing Oasis Between Tradition and Modernity in Barcelona

27 January 2025

If there’s one thing that characterizes Barcelona, it’s its diversity. Many of the corners of its most historic places have their own charm, and often blend with modern life. In the city’s different neighborhoods, there are iconic sites that stand out because they have been part of the city for a long time and often remain, although in others they are transformed.

The latter is the case of Glories Park, located in the heart of the Sant Martí district. In recent times, it has become a place of relaxation between tradition and modernity.

Its historical transformation

Its initial history is linked to the Cerdà Plan, an interesting 19th-century urban development project that transformed Barcelona into a modern city. Despite this, for many years, Glories Square remained a large roundabout for traffic, although the idea was for it to be the “new heart of the city” and precisely there, Avenida Diagonal, Avenida Meridiana, and the famous Gran Via de les Cortes Catalanes converge.

Little by little, the idea of revitalizing the area gained more and more strength until 2007 when a plan began to convert it into a sustainable space. This included eliminating the traffic area, creating pedestrian zones, and creating gardens designed to promote diversity. A profound and different change that demonstrated the transformation of the city and was more adapted to the times.

Finally, in 2021, it was officially inaugurated and is now a symbol of contemporary Barcelona, as it is accessible, sustainable, and oriented towards its citizens or visitors who often come from all over the world. As a green space, it is usually a place to relax, but we’ll tell you some things you can do.

Activities to do in the park and surroundings

  • Walk and relax: At any time of day you need a break, you will have this ideal place at your disposal. With its green spaces, a large expanse of lawn, and shady areas, you can take advantage of Barcelona’s climate to unwind. There are also the so-called “loungers,” very comfortable chairs where you can sit and listen to music, read, or simply contemplate the moment.

  • Visit the Disenny Hub: If you are interested in art and design, you can visit this museum located right there, which organizes temporary exhibitions that are usually quite interesting. A clear example of what contemporary Barcelona and the 21st century are: modernity, nature, culture, and diversity.

  • Outdoor sports: Many people who come to Glories Park find their well-being by doing sports. It is quite common to see people practicing yoga or Pilates, or young people playing football.
